Estimates of Ocean Mixing Coefficients |

5 |
The global ECCO synthesis procedure is used to estimate horizontal |
6 |
and vertical ocean mixing coefficients (viscosity and diffusivity) |
7 |
that are consistent with WOCE data sets, the atmospheric forcing fields |
8 |
and the model physics. Those coefficients are estimated as time-constant |
9 |
but geographically varying fields and are adjusted along with surface |
10 |
momentum and buoyancy forcing so as to bring the model into consistency |
11 |
with global data sets over the period 1992 through 2000. Information |
12 |
is provided about the estimation procedure and and the resulting |
13 |
changes of the mixing coefficients is being described. |
14 |
While the estimated coefficients lead to a reduced model drift, their |
15 |
physical interpretation in terms of eddy transfers is not always as |
16 |
expected. |
